Hello 5th Grade Parents and Students!!! Here are the ANNOUNCEMENTS for this week-October 16-20, 2017
Monday will be a DAY 1 on the Specials Schedule.
BV Virtue of the Month: RESPONSIBILITY
- Penny Wars for United Way will be held October 16-20. Each pod will be competing for the highest total of coins in their bucket.
Students will bring coins, separated into different bags of silver coins and pennies, to school on any day next week to put into their grade level’s bucket. Silver coins will add to the grade level’s total and pennies will deduct from the total.
For example, a kindergartener will put silver coins in their own bucket and pennies in first grade’s bucket and vice versa. The grade level in each pod with the highest total will earn an extra recess!
All coins will be donated to The United Way of Greater Kansas City. We can all make a huge difference one penny at a time!
- Dental screenings will take place on Friday, Oct 20th, 2017.
The Johnson County Health and Environment sends trained hygienists to screen elementary students whose parents have given consent on the annual registration and enrollment forms.
- IMPACT Club will meet on Wednesday at 7:30am in the library.
- Reading is FUN Club will meet on Wednesday, after school at 3:45pm in the library.
- Fall Conferences are next week on October 23rd, 25th and 26th. I sent home a “reminder sheet” with your child on Friday last week of your scheduled day and time. I look forward meeting all of you and discussing your child’s progress thus far! They are an AMAZING class and I am excited to brag about them!!
NO SCHOOL- Thursday, October 26th and Friday, October 27th
- FALL FESTIVAL is coming in just a few short weeks. When thinking about your child’s costume for school, please make sure that it is school appropriate, i.e. no blood, gore, facsimile weapons of any kind. If your child has a mask or piece that covers their head, they will be able to wear for the parade.
Parade begins at 2:30pm on the soccer fields; weather permitting and then we will head to the classroom for the party.
7. We are in need of CLOROX WIPES donations! We keep our room clean and germ-free by wiping down our desks and chairs each evening, but our stash is getting low. Students receive bonuses for any and all donations of suppliesJ Thank you in advance!
Absences- If you know in advance that your child will be absent for an appointment or travel, please let the office know and shoot me an email, so that I can prepare their work ahead of time.

UNITS of Study
Math- The Place Value module will allow students to use charts, number lines, and estimation to represent place value. Students will develop a foundation for understanding place value and representing large numbers. Topic One is focused around recognizing that in a multi-digit number, a digit in one place represents 10 times as much as it represents in the place to its right. Students will also read, write, and compare decimals to the tenths, hundredths, and thousandths. They will read and write decimals to thousandths using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form. Lastly, students will compare two decimals to thousandths based on meanings of the digits in each placxe, using <, >, =, and < symbols to record the results of comparisons.
Reading- UNIT 1 is called COMMON GROUND and it reflects on the students' shared experiences. They will be connecting reading to social studies and learning the concepts of togetherness, cultures, friendship, and diversity. By the end of the unit, they will be able to answer the Theme Question: How Do We Achieve Common Ground? Students will have many engaging reading opportunities during the unit. Each week of the unit covers a different Focus Question that will help your child answer the overarching Theme Question.
Writer's Workshop- We just finished up a mini grammar unit on types of sentences, subjects adn predicates.
This week, we will begin Unit 1 of writing, which we will focus on INFORMATIVE Writing that allows students to select a topic to inform their audience. We will create a five paragraph writing piece that will include text features, such as subtitles, graphics, and captions. Students will be required to use 3 sources: one book, and two online source. We will also be taking time to tlearn how to annotate notes, explore the Blue Valley databases for safe online sources to locate the necessary information for their topics. We will utilizing Google Drive to type our reports, so that I can be conferencing with your student as they are typing their reports at school AND at home.
This Informative project will be due Friday, October 21st.
Social Studies- Using our History Alive text and Social Studies Weekly Articles, we will be wrapping up with Ch. 5- Growing Tensions between the Colonies and Britain. Students will learn about the growing tensions between the colonists and Britain prior to the Revolutionary War and compare the situation to a strained relationship between parent and child.
