COMMUNITY SERVICE

Cottonwood Point Elementary School’s community service projects are both deep and wide.  As a school, emphasis is given to characteristics of gratitude, curiosity, perseverance, empathy, reflection, and integrity.  These principles are taught in daily lessons and problem-based projects and are also the foundation of community service CPE.

The CPE Fifth Grade Leadership Club listens to ideas from students across the building and determines which projects will be completed through the year as a school. Additionally, the school hosts a book drive and a canned food drive as seasonal collections.

Often, students bring their ideas forward out of their own learning and experiences. The Fifth Grade Leadership Club, led by teacher sponsors, then thinks through the benefits of proposed projects as well as the logistics in terms gaining school-wide participation.  The efforts serve both local and global needs as well offer students the opportunity to gain community service hours.

Students are recognized at the end of the year for their collective and individual contributions as some of our students receive the Presidential Excellence Award for their efforts. Students may turn in their community service hours to the school counselor for this recognition.

The recognition, however, is not the focus of community service.  The desire is to truly help others and to be of service.  Children are offered concepts such as servant leaderships. They engage in leadership lessons which offer fun facts and one being: research indicates gratitude as a trait which aligns to well-being and happiness for all ages.  CPE students are engaged in service and gratitude through a variety of projects each year.
