ABOUT EARLY CHILDHOOD SPECIAL EDUCATION
-
Early intervention is critical for children who have developmental delays. Blue Valley Schools provides Early Childhood programs for children ages 3, 4, and 5 (if not eligible for kindergarten) who meet the eligibility requirements for Special Education. School staff and parents work together to determine how to best to meet a child's needs. Service delivery models for children 3-5 (not kindergarten eligible) include:
- Appointment services
- Community-based services (within district boundaries)
- Early Childhood Special Education / Peer Model classrooms
- Eligible children ages 0-2 years are served by Infant Toddler Services of Johnson County.
Eligibility for services is determined through screening and evaluation for Special Education eligibility. If you are moving into Blue Valley and have a preschool child with an active IEP, contact Emily Waters, school psychologist, at (913) 624-2908 for information, or click here to fill out a form online.

SCREENING FAQs
-
How can I help my child prepare for screening day?
Posted by:Talk with your child about what the morning will be like. Your confidence and enthusiasm will help make the morning a positive one. Having concerns about development can naturally cause stress for parents, but your child will simply know he or she is coming to play if you approach it positively.
-
What will happen when we arrive?
Posted by:You will check in upon arrival and we will guide your child into the screening area, you will be escorted to the parent waiting area. Your confidence at the time of separation is the best way to make this a smooth transition.
-
What will my child be doing while I wait?
Posted by:The screening facilitator will engage your child in games and play activities while observing across developmental areas. A standardized screening tool is used for these observations. We also screen every child's vision and hearing.
-
How long will it take?
Posted by:It takes most children a little less than an hour to complete the screening. We have wi-fi access in the waiting area.
-
When will I find out the results of the screening?
Posted by:The screening facilitator will visit with you when your child is finished; there may be questions based on the result of our observation. The screening team then reviews all the information and uses a computerized tool to obtain screening results. The screening report, including whether we want to see your child for further evaluation, is sent via email within 2 weeks.
-
What happens next?
Posted by:Depending upon the information you provide and what we observe on the screening day, our team will make a recommendation. These may include:
- No recommendations - skills appear within age-appropriate limits at this time,
- Further evaluation - with your permission, we would like to conduct a more formal evaluation in one or more developmental areas,
- More information needed - we would like to visit with you and observe your child in another setting, to determine the next steps.
-
What if I have questions?
Posted by:If you have questions after receiving your child's recommendations, or you have not received them within ten days, please call the early childhood office at (913) 624-2905. To offer feedback about your screening experience, please email to Kendall Burr.
