ABOUT ESSER FUNDS
The federal government enacted the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act on March 27, 2020. With this, allocations were made to state and local governments through the Coronavirus Relief Fund (CRF). Johnson county was allocated $116 million directly from the federal government with this funding source and appropriated $4.8 million, through Strengthening People and Revitalizing Kansas (SPARK) Funds. This allocation went to local Johnson County School districts, to be used to address medical or public health needs related to the emergency & provide economic support to those suffering from employment or business interruptions due to COVID-19.
An additional source of funding went to support school districts through the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) Fund. Financial support was again enacted on December 27, 2020, through the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations (CRRSA) Act and the ESSER II Fund. Some of the Eligible uses for ESSER II include addressing learning loss, preparing schools for reopening, testing, planning, and implementing activities related to summer learning and supplemental after school programs and activities that are necessary to maintain the operation of and continuity of services in local educational agencies and continuing to employ existing staff of the local educational agency, just to name a few.
